Demonstration of the connection of the anvil to the tip of an Autosuture DST series EEA circular stapler used in laparoscopic gastric bypass and esophageal repair surgeries.

The anvil shaft is attached to a gastric tube and the anvil is secured in the flat position by a suture. It is designed to be introduced orally and guided through the esophagus using the gastric tube. After delivery, the suture is cut, the gastric tube is pulled away, and the stapler is connected to the anvil. As the trocar advances into the anvil shaft, the anvil is forced into the open position and locks into place. The two parts of the stapler are then drawn together for the actual stapling.

Flywheel-Driven Human Centrifuge Concept
Click here for full screen view
Concept animation for a novel flywheel-driven human centrifuge. Under the floor, a large electric motor drives a heavy flywheel using an automobile wheel and tire. When the flywheel is up to speed, an electric clutch (yellow mechanism) engages to transfer power to the centrifuge. This concept is based on an actual centrifuge created by the Mayo Clinic in the 1940s that used a car engine, driveshaft, and a differential turned 90 degrees with a car wheel and tire to drive a large flywheel. The centrifuge was designed to avoid large electric and magnetic fields that would interfere with monitoring the biologic sensors on the human subject in the centrifuge.
Modeled and animated with Lightwave 9.6.
